Monday in the NHL | Sabers defeat Capitals 4-3 in shootout

(Buffalo) JJ Peterka and Alex Tuch each found the back of the net in regulation and in a shootout to lead the Buffalo Sabers to a 4-3 victory over the Washington Capitals on Monday night.

Tage Thompson, on the power play, scored the other goal for the Sabres, who ended a three-game losing streak. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 25 shots.

Tom Wilson, twice, and Aliaksei Protas responded for the Capitals, who have lost five of their last six games on the road.

John Carlson had two assists and Charlie Lindgren made 24 saves. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored the only goal for the Capitals in the shootout.

Panthers 1 – Avalanche 3

In Denver, Devon Toews had two goals and an assist to help the Colorado Avalanche defeat the Florida Panthers 3-1.

Mikko Rantanen completed the scoring with an empty-net goal for the Avalanche, who completed their four-game homestand with a 3-0-1 record.

Rantanen’s goal extended his streak of games with at least one point to 14.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 25 saves to improve to 7-1-1 since being acquired from the San Jose Sharks.

Carter Verhaeghe scored the only goal for the Panthers, who have lost four of their last six meetings. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31 shots.
