If I look at how we talk about player welfare today and try to find practical solutions that work for players and their teams, I truly believe that professional is leading the way in many ways.

Progress begins with adequate representation. Along with my colleagues at the IRP, we sit on virtually every working group and committee run by World Rugby, our global governing body. This includes high performance committees for men, women and seven-a-sideas well as the Concussion Task Force and the Player Loading Project Group, to name a few.

Our dialogue with World Rugby is vital. When we sit at the table, the players can express themselves. And when players participate in the conversation, we find solutions that work.

Conversations are not always easy. Ten years ago, World Rugby and player representatives began a difficult conversation that ultimately led to the player welfare guidelineswhich has since become a critical and respected reference.

In 2019, when World Rugby looked to expand its international competitions and offered the first version of the Nations Cup, players saw the professional opportunities, but they also understood the risks. They rightly demanded greater consultation.

The players had a clear position: if we face a greater number of matches – and an increased risk of injuries, including concussions and their possible long-term consequences – we need universal guarantees to protect all players. We need clear guidelines for rest, recovery and rehabilitation.

Looking back, I think everyone who sat around the table to draft what would become the Player Welfare Guidelines can be proud of their work. When players get their right to a safe and healthy workplace, the entire sport benefits. Players and their teams reach higher levels, tournaments become more competitive, fans feel more enthusiasm and rugby attracts a wider global audience.
