Manitoba politicians react to Justin Trudeau’s resignation

Political reactions are pouring into Manitoba following the announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

His colleague and MP for the Saint-Boniface-Saint-Vital riding, Daniel Vandal, who was a minister in the Trudeau government until the last reshuffle last December, says on respect his decision to step down as leader of the Liberal Party of Canada.

He adds that he wishes thank for his leadership and recognizes the government’s achievements during the pandemic, the support offered to families, and the implementation of the Canadian Carbon Rebate.

Daniel Vandal, who is not seeking another mandate, greets especially work [du] government in favor of reconciliation with indigenous peoples, which will serve as a reference for future governments.

Sports Minister and Liberal MP for Winnipeg South, Terry Duguid, recognizes Justin Trudeau’s leadership which helped guide us through challenges and strengthened our commitment to a more inclusive, sustainable and prosperous nation.

For his part, the Liberal MP for Winnipeg South Centre, Ben Carr, who requested Justin Trudeau’s resignation in a letter on social media on Friday, underlines his immense contribution au Canada and thanks him for his contribution to public service. He also greets the significant sacrifices of his family.

We must have a lot of gratitude for the Prime Minister and thank him for his contribution to the country. It’s not easy what he did todayhe added in an interview later in the day.

Elections called for

In addition to announcing his resignation as leader of the Liberals, Justin Trudeau announced that work in the House of Commons will be extended until March 24.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham notes the good working relationship he had with Prime Minister Trudeau and shared priorities. In the same breath, he adds that no matter who the Prime Minister is, Winnipeg’s priorities remain the same.

“My role and that of council is to highlight those priorities and work with the premier, whoever he is, to make sure that the upgrade of the North End water treatment plant happens, to make Winnipeg more safe and have more housing built,” he said during a press scrum.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is expected to respond later today.
