In an online video published Tuesday, January 7, Mark Zuckerberg, dressed in a black sweater, dangling chain, clearly visible, and large watch on his left arm, announced a major shift for his platforms: Facebook, Instagram and Threads. 15 days before the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, its platforms will now “reconnect with freedom of expression”. Conceding having built systems “too complex” to moderate content, he believes that their errors “have too many consequences” and “create too much censorship”, the boss of Meta wants to simplify the rules. He will therefore eliminate the teams of “fact checkers”, and copy the idea of X, by establishing in the United States, community notes, which allow everyone to bring context or contradiction to a post. He announced that he was relaxing the moderation rules, denouncing the “bias of his teams” on subjects linked to gender or immigration and further highlighting content on these subjects, because users want to see more of it. “What began as a gesture of inclusiveness has increasingly been used to silence opinions and exclude people with different ideas, and it has gone too far,” he adds. Filters will focus on “illegal” content or severe rule violations. In addition, the moderation teams will no longer be in California, but in Texas. Finally, denouncing censorship in China, in Latin countries or in Europe “whose laws have institutionalized censorship, preventing anything innovative from being done”, he announced that he wanted to work with the government to counter this “global trend “. Knowing that Elon Musk has almost integrated the Trump government, and benefits greatly from public markets, Marck Zuckerberg feels his platforms are in danger, and has no other choice but to do exactly like the boss of Tesla. The latter was quick to comment: “It’s cool.”
