For fear of being forcibly conscripted into the army, many Ukrainian men now live in hiding. We were able to meet some of them.

A phenomenon worries more and more Ukrainians old enough to be mobilized to the front. Using roadblocks, Tetseka agents seek to forcibly recruit men to join the army. Patrols are also carried out on foot to question local residents. They are placed in strategic places, such as at the exit of a metro in kyiv (Ukraine).

Men are systematically controlled. “Can I see your military documents?”asks an agent to a young man. Last May, Ukraine lowered the age of mobilization from 27 to 25 years. All Ukrainians aged 25 to 60 are likely to be sent to the front. “Unfortunately, force is used.”admits Senior Sergeant Oleksandr Siryl. The pressure on recruitment has intensified considerably in recent weeks. In dire need of men, the Ukrainian army is looking for its new soldiers where it can.

In Kharkiv, if the streets are deserted, it is because the men fear being conscripted by force. Some of them agreed to confide.
