“I’m in shock. I’ve been doing this for over 45 years, and this is the first time I’ve won an award as an actress.”
This is how Demi Moore received, this Sunday, the award for best actress in a musical film or comedy during the 82nd edition of the Golden Globes. She won recognition for her role as Elizabeth Sparkle, a fading television star, in The Substancea brutal satire on the cult of youth and beauty, tinged with gore.
Faced with what will be her last fitness show and for fear of falling into oblivion, Sparkle decides to try a mysterious elixir of youth, promoted by a familiar slogan: “Become the best version of yourself.”
It’s a film about “the violence that we women inflict on ourselves”described the 61-year-old actress, in one of the most poignant speeches of the evening.
For Moore, who was the highest-paid actress of the ’90s but has been virtually absent from the screens in recent years, this role marks a true renaissance in the industry.
Her acting talent shines through in The Substance, where she is completely and unvarnished.
His triumph at the Golden Globes oPaves the way for a possible Oscar nominationthe finalists of which will be announced on January 17.
“A popcorn actress”
“30 years ago, a producer told me I was a popcorn (or B-movie) actress, which at the time didn’t make me a candidate for that genre prices,” Moore began while speaking on stage.
“It meant that I could make popular films, which made a lot of money, but that I would never be recognized for my talent. And I believed in it,” she added.
“It ate away at me over time, to the point where, a few years ago, I started to think that this was it, that maybe I had already done what I was supposed to do,” she confided.
This vicious circle was broken thanks to French director Coralie Fargeat, Moore revealed, sincerely thanking her.
“I was in a very dark period when I received this magical, daring, courageous, revolutionary and completely crazy script titled The Substanceand the universe told me: ‘No, it’s not over for you yet,’” the actress said.
Moore wanted to conclude her speech with a message that she believes is conveyed by the film.
“In those moments when we don’t feel smart, beautiful, thin or successful enough, or simply when we think we’re not enough, you will be able to see your value if you put aside the measuring ruler“, she emphasized.
“So today I celebrate this award as an indicator of my wholeness and the love that drives me, and the gift it is to do something that I love and that reminds me that I am part of this world,” she concluded.
From the highest paid to oblivion
Born in the town of Roswell (New Mexico, United States), Demi Moore had a difficult childhood before leaving home at 16 to work as a receptionist at the 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles. Once there, she decides to try her luck in acting.
His first role came in 1981, at the age of 19, in the film ”Decision”.
But it was in 1985 that she really became known thanks to her role as Jules in “St Elmo, point of encounter”a film that laid the foundations for Generation X and revolutionized adolescent cinema.
But it is with “Ghost or love stronger than death!” that she achieved worldwide fame.
Made on a budget of just $22 million, the film grossed $500 million, becoming the biggest hit of the year.
This role earned him a Golden Globe nomination in 1991in the same category for which she was honored this year.
Her career took off and she became the highest-paid actress of the time, while often being in the spotlight thanks to her relationship with actor Bruce Willis.
With Stripteaseit marks another milestone. Although the film was a critical failure, she pocketed $12.5 million, a salary that only male actors received at the time.
“It was important because it wasn’t just me; it was a way of changing the rules of the game for all women,” she said at the time to Variety.
“But the narrative quickly evolved: ‘She earns this amount just because she plays a stripper.’ This affected me deeply, but at the same time, I understood that every time we challenge the the state in whichwe take a hit,” she added.
The sequel was marked by commercial failures, such as”Lieutenant O’Neill”and the media began to associate her name less and less with her acting roles and more and more with her personal life or physical appearance.
When Moore received the script for The Substance, she had almost stopped receiving roles. Today, with this award, she is once again seen as one of the favorites in the Oscar race.
It’s a real comeback.
