(AOF) – The Canadian currency gained 0.52% to 0.6969 US dollars after reaching a session high of 0.7003 US dollars. Confirming press rumors, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation late in the afternoon. The country has been going through a political crisis since the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland on December 16. She had criticized his tax policy plans.

According to Reuters, Justin Trudeau announced that he will step down as head of government as soon as his political party, the Liberal Party of Canada, has found a successor. He also proposed suspending the current legislative session, in order to avoid a vote of no confidence in Parliament.

The Canadian dollar also benefited during the day from information from the Washington Post according to which Donald Trump’s advisors are considering customs duties applying to all countries, but only targeting critical imports. At the end of November, he threatened to impose customs duties of 25% on all products from Mexico and Canada on his first day in office. “This is a new example of ‘fake news’” reacted Donald Trump on his social network.
