The municipality of Gamboon the northeast coast of the island of Newfoundland, declared a state of emergency following a windstorm that caused significant flooding on Sunday.
The local fire chief, Keith Peckfordsays areas around the coastline have been evacuated and several entrances to the city have been closed for security reasons. Five residents had to spend the night somewhere other than their home as a precaution.
Power lines were down, trees were torn down and patios were torn from homes.
The carrier Marine Atlantique announced on Monday the cancellation of its crossings between North SydneyNova Scotia, and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland.
After the wind, the snow
After the wind, it’s snow that complicates things Monday in eastern Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the counties of’Inverness and of Victoriain Cape Breton. By morning, all roads in western Cape Breton were covered in snow.
The snowfall could be long and persist until Monday evening. Accumulations of up to 60 centimeters are possible in the highlands. Elsewhere, we are talking about 15 to 30 centimeters.
Strong winds and blowing snow could impair visibility on the roads Monday evening and overnight.
Numerous delays in Prince Edward Island
Environment Canada also issued a winter storm warning for eastern Prince Edward Island. In the county of Kings, periods of snow and strong winds will continue to give areas of blowing snow today
says the meteorological agency.
These conditions are expected to continue throughout the day Monday and ease late in the afternoon or evening, according to Environment Canada.
As a safety measure, the Confederation Bridge has restricted the passage of certain categories of high-profile vehicles. Authorities estimate these restrictions could remain in effect until around 2 p.m. Monday.
The opening of several government offices is delayed in the east of the province.
School closures
In Nova Scotia, the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial (CSAP) announced that schools Notre-Dame-de-l’AcadieNDABeau-Port, Belle-Baie and the Acadian School of Pomquet are closed Monday due to the weather.
The offices of Provincial Acadian School BoardTENTACLE de Petit-de-Grat are also closed in the morning.
In Prince Edward Island, the French language school La-Belle-Cloche in Rollo Bay and all English language schools in the region Morell and Souris are closed for the day. Other schools in the province opened their doors an hour late.
Collège de l’Île has canceled its morning classes at its campuses Charlottetown and of Wellington. The University of Prince Edward Island has closed its campus St. Peters Bay for the day and delayed until noon the opening of its main campus in Charlottetown.
