– The benchmark gas price increases in January 2025 compared to last month.
The year 2025 begins with an increase in gas prices. Every month, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) publishes a benchmark sales price for natural gas for consumers. This month of January 2025 is no exception to the rule. As a reminder, the gas benchmark price reflects the costs borne by gas suppliers. It plays a vital role in guiding households to identify suppliers offering competitive prices and avoid those with excessive prices.
According to the Commission’s estimates, in January 2025, the average benchmark price is 102,78 euros/MWh HTeither 145,04 euros/MWh TTC for all consumers. This represents an increase of approximately 4,38 % compared to the month of December 2024. However, as recalled the Service-public.fr websitealthough the price of the kilowatt hour increases, the price of the natural gas subscription has remained stable since July 2024 : 114.30 euros including tax per year for cooking/hot water and 277.43 euros including tax per year for heating. Stabilization at a high level of gas prices
Since 2019, the price of natural gas for households has increased sharply, stabilizing, of course, in the first half of 2024 but at a very high level. Several reasons are involved. There Russia’s war in Ukraineas well as the economic recovery after the Covid-19 health crisis, have “led to a sharp increase in wholesale gas and electricity prices», recalled the site Vie-publique.fr in September 2023. As an indication, the average prices of electricity and gas on the markets were each multiplied by seven between 2019 and 2022.
Another reason given: a drastic drop in customers. Many French people are moving away from fossil fuels and preferring to turn to electricity. So, “those who stay on gas are fewer in number, but they must bear the costs”explains Jacques Percebois, energy economist, to West France.

Consumer vigilance on the chosen subscription
The Energy Regulatory Commission is also calling on consumers to be vigilant to limit costs. These must be “attentive to the different options of the offers proposed by the suppliers» explains the CRE on its website. In addition, suppliers also have obligations towards households: suppliers have a duty to provide information and advice to offer each customer the offer best suited to their situation and actual energy consumption.
