A potential agreement is emerging between Israel and Hamas. According to media reports, negotiations in Qatar could lead to the release of several Israeli hostages.
“Women, the sick, children and the elderly”
While the conflict between Israel and the Hamas is still relevant, discussions resumed in Qatar this weekend with a view to an agreement on a ceasefire. The mediators are redoubling their efforts to reach a solution.
According to media reports, the Palestinian movement is ready to release 34 Israeli hostages as part of an exchange. This list would include women, children and the elderly. However, the Jewish state said it had not yet received it.
“Hamas and the resistance groups need about a week of calm…”
To progress, the Hamas claims “a week of calm to communicate with the kidnappers and identify the (hostages) dead or alive”according to a leader of the movement, who requested anonymity. This pause seems important to facilitate exchanges.
For his part, Israel remains adamant on post-conflict governance. The Jewish state categorically refuses to allow Hamas to continue to rule this territory. Disagreements over the duration and modalities of the ceasefire also complicate the situation.
