It is an absolutely spectacular disaster film which was a triumph when it was released in 1996.
And triumph, the word is weak.
The film overturns the codes of cinema, paving the way for the rebirth of a particular genre.
This film is Independence Day; the day of the response, Independence Day or ID4 in English, by Roland Emmerich.
The story starts from a very simple premise: What if we were not alone in the universe?
And what to do when our Earth is attacked by beings from space?
It all begins on a completely ordinary summer day, when suddenly gigantic shadows cover the Earth.
The future of the planet and the survival of humanity are now at stake.
But let’s have no fear, three men – a pilot, a scientist and the President of the United States – will save us.
The Last Chance Battle will take place on the American National Day, July 4.
Simple, even simplistic, the plot of this film by Roland Emmerich will nevertheless titillate something else: the great spectacle.
On the screen: explosions, New York, Los Angeles, , Moscow wiped off the map, heroes, and humor.
The director returns, just before the year 2000, with the Apocalypse version of total destruction, reinvents disaster films, playing on one-upmanship, modeling himself on the war films of the 60s, on the disaster films of the 50s, and on a whole universe of science fiction films that rocked his childhood, with endless invasions of aliens, each more evil than the last.
Pinned by critics, hated, mocked, Independence Day meets its audience who flock in droves to see it. It shakes in all directions, we are amazed, and Roland Emmerich comes out with his head held high.
