While Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka share a close friendship off the court, fans hoping to see the duo team up in doubles during the Brisbane International were disappointed. Instead, Badosa teamed up with Ons Jabeur, and during a press conference, she revealed the reason behind the decision.


“She doesn’t need it right now” – Badosa on Sabalenka

Badosa, who suffered an early exit in both singles and doubles in Brisbane, humorously explained that Sabalenka did not need additional training to perform at her best:

“I have a great relationship with Ons. Also with Aryna if that happens, but I think she doesn’t need many matches right now (smiling). She’s doing well like that. »

Badosa emphasized that teaming up with Jabeur was a strategic move aimed at perfecting their games, especially for times when they both needed more precision in matches.


A difficult outing in Brisbane for Badosa

The Spanish player, seeded number four in Brisbane, was eliminated in the second round of singles by Elina Avanesyan in a hard-fought three-set match. In doubles, she and Jabeur were beaten by future champions, Diana Shnaider and Mirra Andreevain the second round. Despite these early eliminations, Badosa hinted that she wanted to continue her doubles partnership with Jabeur for future tournaments.

“I think it helps each other,” Badosa added of the doubles, recognizing the benefits of an extra match.


Sabalenka’s Brisbane triumph sets tone for 2025

While Badosa’s campaign in Brisbane was difficult, her best friend Aryna Sabalenka thrived. There world no. 1 won his 18th career title after a comeback victory against the 21-year-old qualifier Polina Kudermetova in the final. This marked the Sabalenka’s second title at the Brisbane International and his fourth title on Australian soil.

Sabalenka heads to theAustralian Openaiming at a historic third consecutive titlea feat last achieved by Martina Hingis.

“I feel my game quite well. Mentally, physically I will be ready for the Australian Open,” Sabalenka said after her victory, expressing confidence in her preparation.
