Ethiopia joins AUSSOM, the new African Union mission in Somalia, to strengthen the fight against Shebab and promote regional stability.
Ethiopia recently announced its commitment to work with the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), marking a turning point in relations between the two nations. This initiative aims to fight against radical Islamist Shebab insurgents, a persistent threat for more than 15 years.
This statement comes after an official visit by Ethiopian Defense Minister Aisha Mohammed Mussa to Mogadishu. Discussions with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud sealed a strategic cooperation agreement, highlighting strengthened bilateral relations and a common goal of regional stability.
A crucial mission: from ATMIS to AUSSOM
AUSSOM, which has replaced the former African Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) since 1998, symbolizes new hope for the conflict-torn country. Equipped with a contingent of 11,000 men, this force benefits from partial funding of 75% by the United Nations.
-Ethiopia’s involvement in the mission was uncertain until recently, due to tensions over a controversial maritime deal with the breakaway region of Somaliland. However, the signing of a reconciliation agreement under the aegis of Turkey made it possible to reestablish a constructive dialogue between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu.
Security and diplomatic challenges
The fight against the Shebab represents a complex challenge for Somalia. These insurgents, known for their deadly attacks and their grandiose influence, continue to threaten national and regional security. The integration of Ethiopian troops into AUSSOM could strengthen the operational capabilities of this mission, but also raise questions about the effectiveness of coordination between multinational forces.
Furthermore, the recent collisions at the Doolow border demonstrate the fragility of relations between the two countries, despite their stated desire to work together. Somali Foreign Minister Ali Mohamed Omar stressed the importance of respecting Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a sensitive point in bilateral negotiations.
An opportunity for regional peace
This collaboration between Ethiopia and Somalia could mark a historic turning point in the fight against terrorism in East Africa. The two nations’ engagement, although recently consolidated, sends a strong message in favor of regional stability.
