Here are the 5 municipalities which have gained the most inhabitants in the Caen metropolitan area in recent years

What do we have in common? Castine-en-Plaine, Thaon, Le Castelet, Carpiquet et Bourguébus besides the fact that these five municipalities are all part of the agglomeration of Caen (Calvados)? The answer lies with their demographic dynamism.

All have a rate of annual growth of their population greater than 3%over the period 2016-2022, according to the latest figures published by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) in December 2024. This rate is 3.4% for Castine-en-Plaine, 3.5 % for Thaon, 3.9% for Le Castelet, 4.8% for Carpiquet and 5% for Bourguébus.

+ 2,995 inhabitants for Caen in six years

Of these five municipalities, Bourgébus and Carpiquet are the only two which are in the top 5 of the municipalities having gained the most inhabitants over the period 2016-2022 in the Caen agglomeration. In mind, we logically find Caen with 2,995 additional soulsfollowed by Carpiquet (798), Fleury-sur-Orne (793), Bourguébus (646) and Bretteville-sur-Odon (633).

At the other end of the ranking, ten municipalities have lost inhabitants : Giberville (28 fewer inhabitants in six years), Eterville (-38), Sannerville (-42), Saint-Contest (-51), Bénouville (-68), Saint-André-sur-Orne (-90), Troarn (-100), Louvigny (-144), Démouville (-192) and Hérouville Saint-Clair (-228).

In terms of rates reflecting the annual downward trend in the population between 2016 and 2022, it is Louvigny which is struggling the most (-1%), without experiencing a significant fall.

Nearly 12,000 more inhabitants in the urban area

The Caen la mer agglomeration had, on January 1, 2022, 277,248 inhabitants, or precisely 11,782 more than on January 1, 2016 (up 4.4%) according to INSEE. The population of Calvadosas a whole owes a lot to the demographic dynamism of the Caen metropolitan area. The Normandy department had 693,679 souls in 2016, compared to 704 605 in 2022or 10,926 more inhabitants. This is less than the 11,782 won by Caen la mer in six years.
