While he had taken several people hostage in Arles prison on Friday January 3, the author was admitted to a psychiatric hospital on Saturday.
The man who took five people hostage on Friday January 3 at Arles prison (Bouches-du-Rhône) was admitted to the hospital in a psychiatric unit. His police custody ended on Saturday after a psychiatric expert’s decision on the need to admit him to this unit, reported 20 MinutesSunday January 5. He concluded “to a decompensation of personality disorders having the effect of making him dangerous for himself or for others” and recommended “constrained hospitalization in a specialized environment”said the prosecutor of the Republic of Tarascon, Laurent Gumbau.
He was treated in a specialized hospital center in Vaucluse but “could ultimately be taken care of at the beginning of next week within the specially designed hospital unit (UHSA) in Marseille”indicated the magistrate. He will be interviewed again as soon as his health condition “will be sufficiently stabilized”.
Five people kidnapped
The 37-year-old national, originally from Guyana, had taken four medical staff and a prison guard hostage for five hours in the care unit of the Arles central prison. He had sequestered them under threat of a homemade weapon, before surrendering. His “motive” seemed to be to change penitentiary establishments, but “there was no specific, written request, as prisoners can make to the prison administration”as the prosecutor pointed out.
