Flames ravaged a vacant commercial building in the Villeray district of Montreal on Saturday evening.
Around 8:45 p.m., authorities from the Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) went to Saint-Denis Street, near the intersection with Crémazie Boulevard, due to a fire on a building.
When they arrived, firefighters from the Montreal Fire Department were “already starting to bring the fire under control,” said Caroline Chèvrefils, spokesperson for the SPVM.
According to initial information, one or more suspects broke into the building to set it on fire. They fled before the firefighters and police arrived.
Incendiary items were found at the scene, allowing authorities to confirm that the event was criminal in nature. No people were injured, but major damage was observed to the building.
An investigation was launched by the SPVM arson unit. A stage was erected to better understand the circumstances of the event. Surveillance cameras installed near the fire will be able to shed light on this incident.
No arrests have been made as of this writing.
