Biden administration announces $8 billion in arms sales to Israel

The Joe Biden administration announced this Saturday, January 4, an arms sale to Israel, worth $8 billion.

A few days before Donald Trump’s inauguration at the White House, Joe Biden’s administration announced an arms sale to Israel this Saturday, January 4. Estimated at $8 billion, it includes anti-aircraft defense munitions, according to a source close to the matter.

With this announcement, which must still be approved by Congress, Joe Biden once again brushes aside the pressure put on by certain human rights organizations and elected Democrats, who oppose such sales to Israel.

“The United States is complicit in all these atrocities. We are financing these atrocities and this complicity must stop,” left-wing elected official Bernie Sanders declared in November, during a speech to Congress.

“Israel has the right to defend its citizens”

But “the president clearly expressed that Israel has the right to defend its citizens, in accordance with international law and international humanitarian law, and to deter any aggression coming from Iran and its affiliated organizations,” justified a close to Joe Biden.

A position that Donald Trump should maintain upon his arrival at the White House on January 20, since he has already promised unwavering support for Israel. Although he has expressed his desire to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza, the Republican has never committed to an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, unlike all recent presidents.

Triggered by the unprecedented attack carried out by Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023, the war in Gaza has lasted for more than a year. Despite intense diplomatic efforts led under the aegis of Qatar, Egypt and the United States, no truce has been concluded since the one negotiated at the end of November 2023, lasting one week.
