Sherrie was born on February 18th, 1962 in Norton, VA to Robert and Phyllis Maggard Dorton. She grew up in Wise, VA but moved prior to her senior year in high school and graduated from Midlothian High School in Richmond, VA. She received her Psychology Degree from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA.
She was married in 1991 to Scott W. Johnson, and they have two children, Christopher S. Johnson and Brooke N. Johnson. She was a devout Christian who lived everyday of her life serving the Lord. Sherrie was a talented artist who enjoyed designing clothing and jewelry, as well as painting. Over the course of her life, she worked various jobs including modeling, teaching, and interior design.
Sherrie loved celebrating every occasion, especially Christmas. She found great joy in decorating her home in honor of the season. Her cherished ‘Jesus tree’ could be found every Christmas next to the front door where she would share the Reason for the Season as she handed out candy canes to everyone who came to the door.
No matter what she was doing, Sherrie lived her life on a mission to “make life special” for everyone around her. She was always prepared for extra mouths around the dinner table, ensuring everyone felt at home and left with plenty of leftovers. Sherrie loved being a mom and was proudly her children’s “biggest cheerleader.” She poured out her love and support for her children by hosting parties, designing goodie bags, making meals, giving rides, and decorating lockers for every sports team Christopher and Brooke were a part of. Sherrie would proudly tell anyone who would listen how proud she was of her children.
-She lived for “family time” and cherished the memories made with her husband and kids, especially their trips to the beach. Sherrie would say her greatest life accomplishment was raising her children to know and love the Lord, and she found great joy and fulfillment when both her children accepted Christ into their hearts.
In a way only Sherrie could, she was quick to make strangers feel like family. She was everyone’s friend and confidant and was quick to give prayers, encouragement, and always a hug. Her tender spirit and enthusiasm led many to accept Christ as their Lord and Savior. Her love for children led her to start a church daycare, a Christian puppet ministry, and organize fundraisers to build several church playgrounds.
Sherrie is survived by her mother Phyllis, husband Scott, daughter Brooke, son Christopher, daughter-in-law Lenzie, father & mother-in-law Donald L. & Patricia “Gayle” Johnson and her grandchildren Sutton and Stetson.
