The icy track of Kranjska Gora created difficulties for the Swiss during the first giant of the year on Saturday. The Swede Sara Hector won.

Kranjska Gora did not do the Swiss any favors on Saturday. The first women’s event of the year 2025 ended without a Swiss podium. It was the Swede Sara Hector, already masterful in the first round, who won with a big margin, ahead of the Albanian prodigy Lara Colturi and the New Zealander Alice Robinson.

The first round of the giant has already set the tone: on an extremely icy, but also changeable, slope, many skiers had difficulties on Saturday. A second round drawn by Pauli Gut, the father of Lara Gut-Behrami, did not succeed in changing the situation. The winner of the big Globe and that of the specialty finished as the best Swiss woman, 6th in the end. Camille Rast, 15th after the first round, pulled out all the stops in the second and managed a solid comeback to finish 8th, her 2nd best result this season.

Difficulties for the Swiss

It was more of a fight for Wendy Holdener, who already had a cold a week ago, and who fought until the finish to place 18th. Michelle Gisin, having decided to be more selective this winter, skipped the technical events in Semmering last weekend. However, the break did not yet cause the desired trigger for the Obwalden, who finished 26th.

Delphine Darbellay, Vanessa Kasper, Stefanie Grob, Simone Wild and Janine Mächler did not qualify for the second round.

Sara Hector can aim for the big Globe

Sara Hector, already a winner at Killington, now takes the lead in the overall World Cup standings, as well as that of the giant. Lara Colturi, on the World Cup box for the first time this season during the Gurgl slalom, adds a giant podium to her record
