WORLD DARTS CHAMPIONSHIP 2025 – At barely 17 years old, Englishman Luke Littler wins the world crown by beating legend Michael van Gerwen in the final (7-3). A major event across the Channel and one which is taking on great importance at the international level.
At Alexandra Palace in London, 3,500 fans shout without half-measure in a crowded and overheated room. However, it is not an ice hockey match, nor a basketball match. No, this passionate audience comes to salute the astonishing performances of professional darts players. Each year, during the World Championships, the popular success across the Channel never fades, to the point of becoming an unmissable event during the end-of-year holidays.
A very British event
However, the triumph of the competition has so far only crossed borders. This is evidenced by the nationality of the participants, the vast majority of whom are British, as are the main headliners of the tournament. Thus, the Nathan Aspinall, Luke Humphries world number one, Gerwyn Price, Michael Smith or even Peter Wright are all citizens of the Crown.
Of course, the existence of the Batavian ogre Michael van Gerwen fold the discipline cards. The Dutchman remains the absolute reference in darts in recent years with three world champion titles (2014, 2017, 2019). Far behind, however, the Englishman Phil Taylor and its 14 crowns from 1994 to 2013.
La sensation Luke Littler
It is in this context that the 2025 tournament delivered its verdict for a prize money historic 2.5 million dollars, proof of the growing popularity of darts. Once again, the British stood out and placed a representative in the final. And not just any one since it concerns the young 17-year-old prodigy, Luke Littler, already fourth in the world. The atmosphere promised to be whirlwind as he faced the master van Gerwenback in the final two years after his defeat against Michael Smith.
Intractable, the English kid quickly created a decisive gap leading 4 sets to nothing against a disoriented opponent. Best on triples and especially doubles to conclude the rounds, Luke Littler showed remarkable mental strength when the match was balanced. In the last set, he concluded without trembling to win 7-3 against the Dutch legend. This is the first world title for the Briton who, carried by a jubilant crowd, has already marked the history of his sport.
