Drama in the House of Representatives. While everyone was waiting for the second round of voting to begin, the election for Speaker of the House took an unexpected turn this Friday afternoon: two Republican representatives who had voted against Mike Johnson changed their minds and contributed to the re-election in the first round of the Louisiana representative to the position he had held since October 2023.
Representatives Keith Self of Texas and Ralph Norman of South Carolina were the ones Johnson convinced to change their votes with the help of Donald Trump, who spoke with them on the phone. Johnson and the Republicans will therefore not have to relive the days of dysfunction that preceded the election of Kevin McCarthy in early 2023.
But that doesn’t mean his tenure will be easy. After voting for Johnson, Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy issued this warning about X: “Everything we do must enable Congress to succeed and implement Trump’s agenda for the American people. President Johnson has not yet been clear on this, so many members, beyond the three who voted for someone else, have reservations. »
This vote marks the start of the 119th Congress, one of whose first tasks will be to certify the results of the 2024 presidential election on January 6.
