The poster for the World Darts final is known: Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen are the last to be able to compete for the world crown.
Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen will compete for the title on Friday in the final of the World Darts Championships taking place in London, Great Britain. The new star of the sport and the three-time world champion both won their tickets on Thursday, during the semi-finals.
Michael van Gerwen (PDC 3) was the first to make Alexandra Palace roar. The Dutchman did not tremble against the Englishman Chris Dobey, 15th player in the world who had reached the last four of the Worlds for the first time in his career. The experience paid off and Van Gerwen won comfortably 6-1, maintaining an average of 98.84 against his opponent’s 94.77, with 18/42 at checkout.
‘MvG’ is now seeking a 4th world crown after his coronations in 2014, 2017 and 2019. Now aged 35, he still holds the record for the youngest world champion established during his first final victory, at 24 years old.
Luke Littler (PDC 4) will, however, have the opportunity to obliterate this record. The Briton has not yet celebrated his 18th birthday when he is already preparing to compete in the second final of his career at the world championships. Disappointed last year against the Englishman Luke Humphries, Littler arrived pumped up with a resounding victory, 6-1 against Stephen Bunting (PDC 8), in the semi-final.
‘Luke the Nuke’ showed confidence, while his compatriot failed to find his rhythm in the game. Both players maintained high averages (105.48 for Littler and 100.10 for Bunting), but the decisive moments favored the youngest. He managed 19/43 at checkout, compared to 12/33 for Stephen Bunting.
The final will take place in the legendary ‘Ally Pally’ this Friday at 9:00 p.m. (Belgian time) and will be watched live on RTL play.
