Four members of medical staff and a prison officer were taken hostage by an inmate at Arles prison (Bouches-du-Rhône) this Friday. The man, aged 37, finally surrendered in the middle of the afternoon.
According to the Parisianhe “had hidden homemade weapons under a bandage before being admitted to the infirmary” and threatened his hostages with homemade picks.
Originally from Guyana, in South America, he was sentenced on appeal to 18 years in prison for rape at gunpoint, had already been imprisoned for acts of violence and was eligible for release in 2031.
According to our colleagues, the detainee was refused after requesting his transfer to another detention center. However, he is an “individual who, through his profile and his past, had shown his dangerousness”, declared Pierre-Edouard Colliex, the Bouches-du-Rhône police prefect, shortly after the detainee's arrest.
-The detainee surrendered to the police and was taken into custody. The investigation was entrusted to the Banditry Repression Brigade (BRP). The hostages were not injured.
