A hostage taking is underway this Friday, January 3, at the Arles central house, according to La Provence. An inmate restrains several members of prison staff.

The inmate, aged 37, was incarcerated for rape at gunpoint and wishes “change prison center“. He was up for release in 2031. He is known for “significant psychiatric disorders” and had been reported radicalized in 2013, according to La Provence.

He first took four members of medical staff and a prison officer hostage using a homemade bladed weapon, according to the Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin. A female doctor was freed after a Raid response team arrived at the scene. The police chief and the public prosecutor are also on site.
