Novak Djokovic, seventh player in the world, was unceremoniously knocked out 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 Friday by the American Reilly Opelka, ranked only 293rd, in the quarter-finals of the ATP 250 tournament in Brisbane, a defeat of bad omen for the Serbian before the Australian Open.

The 2.11 m American gave the Serbian no chance, notably hitting 16 aces and multiplying unstoppable shots.

Djokovic, former world number 1 who is coming out of a 2024 season without a grand slam title – a first since 2017 – wants to try to win a 25th grand slam title in Melbourne, his favorite major tournament which he has won ten times, from January 12.
