Vannes Cathedral under construction for two years, parish life will take up residence in the Saint-Yves chapel

“A great challenge, a great adventure, a great challenge! The parish community is capable of experiencing this”… Three days before the liturgical closing of Saint-Pierre de Cathedral, Father Patrice Marivin, parish priest – archpriest, is confident. The day after Epiphany, from Monday January 6, Vannes Cathedral will be closed for 27 months of restoration work on the nave and side chapels.

The parishioners of the 21st century will have the chance to discover in 2027 a cathedral that no one else will have seen before them…

“It’s a great challenge, a real adventure, a great challenge. The parish community is capable of experiencing this,” says Father Patrice Marivin, priest of the cathedral.

The mass will be followed around 12:15 p.m. by a procession from Saint-Pierre cathedral to Saint-Yves chapel, with the relics of Saint Vincent Ferrier, a procession opened by the bagad of Rhuys requested by the festival committee.

The Saint-Yves chapel, “HQ” of the parish for 2 years

From January 6 and until Easter 2027, the Saint-Yves chapel will therefore become the parish heart of the cathedral parish. All weekday services will be celebrated there, as well as Saturday evening and Sunday evening masses. On the other hand, Sunday morning masses at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. (from January 12) will be celebrated in the large chapel (600 to 800 heated seats) of the Saint-François-Xavier college-high school. It can be accessed in two ways: on foot via rue du Drezen and by car via rue Joseph-Sauveur, with the possibility of parking in the car park which will be open for this purpose.

Baptisms, weddings and funerals will be celebrated in the Saint-Yves chapel (except funerals in case of high attendance which will in this case be celebrated in the SFX chapel).

Promoted to “HQ” of the parish for two years, the Saint-Yves chapel will therefore be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Two other statues will join it: that of Saint Anne, in the jubilee year, and that of Saint Anthony who is the subject of particular devotion in the parish.

A baptistery in the Renaissance tower

During this entire period, the cathedral will undergo a real makeover: “The parishioners of the 21st century will have the chance to discover in 2027 a cathedral that no one else will have seen before them. It will never have been so beautiful,” enthuses Pierre Le Bodo, delegate of the cathedral priest for heritage.

The assignee (Father Patrice Marivin) will take advantage of this work campaign carried out as part of the recovery plan, to renew the liturgical plateau, install a baptistery in the Renaissance tower for baptisms by immersion and create a reception and listening.

It will once again be possible to visit the cathedral, the most visited monument in the department with a million visitors per year, from Easter 2025 via two accesses, via rue des Chanoines and via the square thanks to a tunnel which will pass under the forest of scaffolding which will fill the nave.
