The year 2024 was marked by significantly less sunshine than normal, MeteoLux said on its website this Thursday. “With 1564.3 hours of sunshine, the year 2024 presents a deficit of 238.6 hours compared to the reference period 1991-2020 (1802.9 hours), specifies the meteorological institute. Note that the least sunny year ever observed at Findel was 1978 with only 1387.8 hours of sunshine.

At the same time, an annual cumulative rainfall of 1090.2 l/m² was recorded last year in the Grand Duchy, i.e. an excess rainfall of 258.9 l/m² compared to the 1991-2020 normal (831.3 l/m²). “The driest year in history is 1976, with an annual cumulative of only 541 l/m² and the wettest year being 1988, with a record annual cumulative of 1202.1 l/m²”, specifies MeteolLux.

In addition, with an average annual temperature of 10.5°C, the year 2024 ranks 8th among the hottest years ever observed in the history of the Luxembourg-Findel airport meteorological station since 1947. “The absolute record is held by the year 2020 (11.3°C), specifies the meteorological institute. The year 2024 is 0.7°C above the 1991-2020 long-term average (9.8°C).”
