Au 1is January 2022, theÎle-de-France account 12 380 964 habitantsconsolidating its position as the most populous region in France with 18% of the national population (excluding Mayotte). Between 2016 and 2022, the region gained on average 44,000 inhabitants per year, an annual increase of 0.36%.
Although this growth is slightly lower than that observed between 2011 and 2016 (+0.44%), it remains comparable to the rate of growth of the French population as a whole (+0.35%).
The relative youth of Ile-de-France residents (39% are under 30 years old compared to 35% nationally) largely explains the demographic dynamics. The excess of births over deaths allows an increase of 0.77% per year, or a rate four times faster than the national average. Île-de-France is thus responsible for three quarters of the national natural balance.
