CANAL+: a call to order after broadcasting the name of a banned sponsor on football jerseys

The DGCCRF has ordered CANAL+ to stop broadcasting the name of a sponsor on football players' jerseys. Advertising for the latter is illegal.

CANAL+ has just been called to order by the national investigation service of the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF).

Illegal advertising

The latter in fact noted that the CANAL+ group had several times visibly broadcast the name of the sponsor “Plus 500” on the jerseys of the players of the Young Boys Berne team during two matches broadcast live as well as on the highlights of the matches visible on myCANAL.

The aforementioned sponsor offers investment services that relate to risky financial contracts. Advertisements for these services are prohibited by the consumer code in and CANAL+ should have blurred them during broadcast and also in the extracts broadcast on its website.

The DGCCRF did not fine the encrypted channel but asked it to cease its practices in the future.

A precedent in 2023

In any case, this is not the first time that this sponsor has caused problems during a broadcast. In January 2023, beIN Sports was unable to broadcast the match between Juventus and Atalanta because of this sponsor.
