Bolivian is currently on hiatus, following a marathon of matches between November and December, which saw Bolívar crowned champion. The relegation situation remains uncertain, with unanswered questions surrounding whether Royal Pari will remain in the top division or whether Totora Real Oruro will be promoted.

However, discussions have already started regarding the system to be implemented in 2025, a pivotal year for the Bolivian national team, which must play six matches in a bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

The Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) will convene the Higher Council of the Professional Division in the coming days, where the format and distribution of prizes for the year will be established. A tentative date for this meeting is set for January 13.

There are several options for this year’s format, with one of the most high-profile being a single tournament where each team competes against each other throughout 2025. Matches would take place once a week, allowing for accommodate the national team. This is the format requested by coach Óscar Villegas.

If that happens, everything will be determined by the standings of that tournament, with qualification for the Copa Libertadores, Copa Sudamericana, and relegation also depending on those results.

Additionally, this format could benefit clubs participating in international tournaments, allowing them to compete on two fronts without having to favor one championship over another.

Other options include replicating the 2024 setup with a short series-based tournament and a long round-robin tournament, or, even less likely, two round-robin tournaments during the year.

The decision will take into account that the FBF is now the sole owner of the broadcast rights, meaning there is currently no fixed number of matches to fill. However, this issue could be revisited during negotiations with companies to broadcast their matches.
