A club in the Brussels region becomes a satellite of the Union Saint-Gilloise… and even changes its name! – All football

The Union Saint-Gilloise extends its influence. The Zaventem club, in P2, changes its name and becomes Union Zaventem, a satellite club.

The KVW Zaventem is dead, long live the Zaventem Union! This is what Piet Ockerman, Alderman for Sport in the city of Zaventem, confirmed to the VRTannouncing that the local club was becoming a satellite club of the Union Saint-Gilloise.

“The club becomes a satellite club of the USG, but remains the Zaventem club under the name Union Zaventem, with its own board of directors and independent operation,” explains Ockerman. “He must always respect the rules of Zaventem, which is a Flemish municipality. All communication must, for example, be in Flemish.”

KVW Zaventem plays in the Flemish P2, but rose to the Proximus League (D2) in 2013, before finally falling to the amateur divisions. Club resulting from a merger between KV Zaventem and KV Woluwé, it is however one of the very established clubs in the region.

It remains to be seen what form the collaboration between the Union Saint-Gilloise and the Union Zaventem will take in the years to come. Player loans? Friendly matches? All this is not mentioned, but KVW Zaventem thereby avoids a very complicated situation.

Indeed, in 2022, Voetbal Vlaanderen had threatened to deregister the club for unpaid debts, and KVW remained under surveillance since. The end of 2024 marked the end of the club’s concessions on its training grounds and stadium, and it was therefore the USG which won the bet.
