The day after the car-ramming attack in New Orleans, the FBI provides an update on the ongoing investigation. During a press conference this Thursday, January 2, Christopher Raia, a senior official of the American federal police, gave details on Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the alleged perpetrator of the attack which left at least 14 dead – the previous death toll of 15 included the suspect.
He also stated that there was no “irrefutable link” between this attack and the explosion the same day of a Tesla in front of a Trump hotel in Las Vegas.
• The alleged perpetrator acted alone
While the American federal police had announced that they were investigating possible links between the author and “terrorist organizations” and search for accomplices – Alethea Duncan, special agent of the FBI, stressed that the authorities “do not believe Jabbar is solely responsible” -, the suspect ultimately seems to have acted alone.
“We do not believe at this stage that anyone else was involved in this attack, with the exception of Shamsud-Din Jabbar”the deceased suspect, Christopher Raia said.
• The suspect declared joining the Islamic State group
The alleged perpetrator had proclaimed his support for the Islamic State group in several videos and also claimed to have joined the organization.
Five videos were posted on Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s Facebook account the day before the attack, in which “he explains that he initially planned to attack his family and friends, but that he was worried that the newspaper headlines would not focus on, quote: “The war between the faithful and the infidels””said Christopher Raia.
• Dthem homemade bombs installed in the city center
In addition to his car-ramming attack, the suspect also planted two pipe bombs in the city’s French Quarter, where crowds were flocking to celebrate the New Year, the FBI said.
“We obtained surveillance videos which show (the suspect) placing the devices where they were found”said Christopher Raia.
• No “irrefutable link” with the Las Vegas explosion
Amid doubt over whether the New Orleans attack was linked to the same day explosion of a Tesla cybertruck outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas, the FBI said it did not there is no “irrefutable link” between the two.
“At this point, there is no compelling link between the New Orleans attack and the Las Vegas attack”assured Christopher Raia.
