TGL preview: Billy Horschel compares the stadium to a Premier League venue, everything about the Sentry tournament and how to follow it

PGA Tour golfer Billy Horschel has likened the TGL stadium to one of the biggest venues in the English Premier League, ahead of the launch of the new indoor league next week.

TGL’s opening night will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo on Wednesday January 8, from 1pm AEDT. Horschel believes the experience for players and fans in the arena will be comparable to attending a home match of his favorite team, West Ham United, at the London Stadium, which also hosted the opening ceremonies and closing of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“It’s like playing at the London Stadium!” Horschel said of TGL’s Sofi Center, located at Palm Beach State College in Florida.

This brand new venue features an impressive golf simulator display, measuring 64 feet high and 53 feet wide, equivalent to five floors. It also includes a putting area and short game area the size of four basketball courts, bringing this new adventure to life.

The screen will also display all the data any golf fan could want, and Horschel believes the concept, developed by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s TMRW company, is aimed at both new fans and traditional golf enthusiasts. .

“For the dedicated golf fan, they’re going to appreciate all the numbers and the data,” he told Sky Sports. “The pitching conditions, the spin of a ball, the distance it traveled – that will get him excited.

“For my part, if I hit a shot and the ball is supposed to reach about 112 feet in height, but it only goes 100 and stays five yards from the target, I will know that it has reached 100 feet in the air and that its rotation was too high, hence this lost distance.

“When we share numbers like this and discuss them among teammates, it’s really fascinating.

“It will work for everyone. The non-golf fan will see something different, while the true enthusiast will get all the data and see the players from a new perspective.”

This new way of discovering 24 of the best players on the PGA Tour, divided into six teams, will be largely influenced by the fact that each player will wear a microphone during their 15-hole matches lasting two hours.

There will definitely be plenty of teasing as players compete in an environment that mimics the real world.

They will tee off in the simulator, but will also have sand from Augusta National for bunker shots, as well as grass and rough areas to replicate approaches.

“What everyone at TGL has created is an incredible product,” he added. “They gave their all to succeed, and now it’s up to us, the players, to be the entertainers.

“We will always be in a competitive spirit; we’ll want to win and claim bragging rights, but we also need to be entertainers and stand out from what people see for 47 weeks a year on the PGA Tour.

“We can show a side that people don’t see on the course and demonstrate a little more of who we are behind closed doors.

“These small details will strengthen the bond between the golf fan and the non-fan, allowing TGL to be a great success.”

Before the reveal of the TGL, when the Golf Club of New York led by Xander Schauffele faces the Bay Golf Club of Australian Min Woo Lee, the PGA Tour will begin Friday morning, Australian time, at the Sentry in Hawaii.

World number one Scottie Scheffler will not be in attendance after injuring his hand while cooking Christmas dinner and needing an operation. Rory McIlroy will also not be there, as he has never played in Kapalua, preferring to start his year a little later on the DP World Tour.

Their absences place the spotlight on Schauffele, who will be competing with TGL teammates Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young, as well as opening night opponents Ludvig Åberg and Wyndham Clark.

Adam Scott, also involved with TGL, begins his year at the Sentry, while Cam Davis and Jason Day will be the other Australians taking part in an event where Australia has a rich history.
