Rise in the price of milk in Europe

In October 2024, in Europe, the price of standard milk amounts on average to €48.93 per 100 kg, an increase of €1.37 compared to the previous month (+2.9%).

Anticipated milk prices calculated in October 2024 average €48.93 per 100 kg of standard milk. This represents an increase of €1.37 compared to the previous month (+2.9%). In annual comparison, the average price in October 2024 is 20% higher than in the same month in 2023. This is shown by the international EDF-ZuivelNL milk price comparison.

This month, almost all milk prices calculated by European dairy organizations have increased again. This increase is again explained by a higher evaluation of fats and proteins. On the other hand, the market outside Europe saw a slight decline. This decline was partially influenced by price changes.

Price developments in Europe and elsewhere
This month, almost all European dairy companies recorded a further rise in milk prices. This progression is mainly explained by an increased use of fats and proteins. Conversely, markets outside Europe saw a slight decline, partly influenced by exchange rate fluctuations.

The drop in costs slows down

According to FranceAgrimer, the standard price of conventional milk stood at €452.3/1,000 l in October 2024, a level of €16.7/1,000 l higher than that of October 2023, as well as only a more modest progression compared to September 2024. At the same time, the decline in livestock costs, which until then was slow but present, seems to have stagnated on the last few months. Indeed, the Ipampa index, at a value of 127.8, remained almost stable from August to October. The slow decline observed in the “Purchased food” item was erased in October by the increases observed in the “energy” and “fertilizer” items.
