To celebrate the new year, the Italian-Gascon Friends association promises Italian celebrations and traditions. On Saturday January 4, Befana will reach the square in front of Auch Cathedral and offer sweets to the Gers children.
This Saturday, January 4, Italy will reach the square of Sainte-Marie Cathedral, in Auch. Like every year, the Italian-Gascon Friends association celebrates the Befana festival. First at 5 p.m., the Gers children will be welcomed at the municipal theater.

“It is a musical tale about the history of Befana,” explains Henri Gaiardo. Then, a lantern parade will be organized to reach the square, “the children will be accompanied by traditional Gascony music” as well as some Italian tunes.

For a quarter of an hour, the Auscitain cathedral will be illuminated, before the Befana descends from the top of the towers. For children, sweets will be distributed before the traditional bonfire or “Pignarûl”. At the same time, drinks, pancakes, Befaninis (small cakes specific to the occasion) and mulled wine will be offered to older children. The atmosphere promises to be festive for the start of 2025.
