The medal of honor for work is awarded twice a year, on the occasion of the promotions of January 1 and July 14. But you must request it in advance. The procedure takes a little time.

What is the long service medal?

Established by decree on May 15, 1948, and managed by the Ministry of Labor, the Labor Medal of Honor aims to reward the investment of any employee within one or more companies.

The medal of honor for work includes four levels depending on seniority:

  • Silver medal : 20 ans
  • Vermeil medal : 30 ans
  • Gold medal : 35 ans
  • Great gold medal : 40 ans.

Certain periods of absence are considered periods of work, such as national service, cmaternity leave, of paternity and the adoption leave (within a maximum of one year). What does this medal bring?

This medal aims to recognize and promote the commitment and loyalty of workers towards their employer and their efforts to acquire better qualifications.

The medal is awarded to employees and retired workers, under certain conditions. Regarding employees, and whatever their nationality, they must:

  • Have worked abroad for a French employer

The long service medal can also be awarded posthumously to an employee who:

  • Had the necessary number of years of seniority on the day of his death
  • Was the victim of a fatal accident while performing his duties

Please note that the long service medal cannot be awarded to magistrates of the judiciary and civil servants subject to civil service status.

How to obtain the diploma and the medal?

The process can be done by you or by your employer. Applications must be submitted before May 1for the July 14 promotion, and before October 15for the promotion of the following January 1st.

The process differs depending on whether you live in France or abroad. The Medal of Honor for Labor is awarded at the request of the employer or employee who must submit an application file to their Prefecture. This file must include:

  • A completed application, dated and signed by the applicant (special form to be obtained from town halls and prefectures)
  • The employer certificate(s) drawn up on plain paper, by which the employer(s) attest to the information contained in the application.

The files must be sent to the Prefect of the department in which the candidate is domiciled.

Financial reward in certain companies

The award of the Medal of Honor for Work results in the issuance of a nominative diploma which is sent, with an order, to the employee who requested it. This diploma recalls the years of service for which the employee is rewarded.

A bonus, at the discretion of the employer, may also accompany the presentation of the Medal of Honor for Work. The medal itself can be engraved at your expense, or paid for by your employer if this is provided for via a collective agreement for example.
