At least ten people were killed and dozens injured in a vehicular attack in the early hours of Wednesday in the Louisiana city of New Orleans.
The incident occurred at 3:15 a.m. (GMT -5) when a man drove his car “at high speed” into crowds celebrating the arrival of the New Year, trying “to hit as many people as possible”, a the city’s police commissioner, Anne Kirkpatrick, told the press.
In addition to the ten dead, around forty injured people were transported to hospital to receive the necessary treatment, added the police official.
The suspect, who “was not driving under the influence of alcohol,” according to Kirkpatrick, also opened fire on police officers, injuring at least two.
This is not a terrorist act, said the deputy head of the Federal Police (FBI) in New Orleans, Alethea Duncan, quoted by the press, adding that the authorities are investigating an improvised explosive device found in the surroundings of the incident.
