Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his New Year’s address to the nation that he has no doubt that US President-elect Donald Trump is “willing and able” to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
“I have no doubt that the new American president is willing and able to achieve peace and end (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s aggression. He understands that the first is impossible without the second. Because this is not a street fight where you have to calm both sides,” Zelensky said in a video posted on his social media accounts.
Explaining that Ukraine is not alone in the conflict, thanks to its partners, he particularly stressed the importance of Washington’s support for his country, believing that the United States would also stand by kyiv “in the first minutes of peace.
Zelensky spoke of his meetings with Donald Trump and with outgoing US President Joe Biden, as well as with other American and international officials, particularly European ones, specifying that it had always been agreed, during these talks, that Russia should not emerge victorious in the war that is tearing Ukraine apart.
“I thank all Americans for putting these words into action,” Zelensky continued.
He added that he was confident that Ukraine and the United States were capable of exerting the force necessary to “compel Russia into a just peace.”
Commenting on the year 2025, Zelensky said he and all Ukrainians must fight every day for a “strong enough” Ukraine, adding: “Because only this Ukraine is respected and heard.” Both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table.”
The Ukrainian president thanked all those who stood and continue to stand by them, adding that his people have overcome everything that the past year has thrown at them.
“Let 2025 be our year. The year of Ukraine. We know that peace will not be given to us as a gift. But we will do everything to stop Russia and end the war. This is what each of us wants,” he concluded.
