At the end of 2024, the magazine The Point published a study on hospitals in France. A ranking, which has not been published for a long time, which takes into account public health data and a questionnaire completed by the hospitals themselves. The compilation of these elements gives a classification in which the Large hospital in the east of the Ile-de-France region (Ghef) is placed “first non-university hospital in Île-de-France and fifth non-university hospital in France”, rejoices Jérôme Goeminne, director of the establishments in Meaux, Jossigny, Coulommiers and Jouarre. Interview.
In the Point ranking, Ghef appears very well ranked in several items. How did you react when you discovered it?
This is excellent news. This ranking allows us to promote the entire Ghef medical community, all the staff. Ghef was already the leading non-CHU hospital in France in terms of size, now it is also in terms of results at the regional level!
Were you surprised by this ranking?
Yes and no. What is certain is that we will be even better next year. To establish its ranking, Le Point looks at hospital certification and we will pass ours in mid-2025. It will be even better.
In March, we are also opening the new building on the Meaux site in which we should be able to carry out more activities and improve hotel quality, since we will go from 30% single rooms to 80%.
Certain specialties rank very high in this ranking, including maternity for example. Where do these good results come from?
We carry out more than 7,000 deliveries per year. And the more you practice, the better you get, so we weren't surprised by this result. [Le Ghef est classé 17e meilleur hôpital de France pour des accouchements dits normaux, N.D.L.R.]. We have quality staff, led by Dr Wafo, who is a member of the College of Gynecologists of France. The quality and quantity of the procedures performed make it possible to recruit quality staff.
This classification helps guide patients in choosing their place of hospitalization. What about health professionals?
It highlights all the work carried out within Ghef. But even before this ranking, Ghef was already a large establishment. We are located less than half an hour from Paris, which allows us to attract health professionals to our establishments. The strong demographic growth of Seine-et-Marne, particularly in its northern part, gives it strong development potential with a significant diversity of procedures to practice. And that too brings in competent doctors.
Ghef is organized into medical teams, which means that we can offer the same level of expertise whether on the Meaux, Marne-la-Vallée or Coulommiers site. Three sites but the same level of quality of support.
This ranking is the logical recognition of our quality of care. In 2026, the Marne-la-Vallée site will open a fifth interventional room for cardiology. It is very rare in France for a hospital to have five rooms of this type, which allows for a variety of interventions.
Another asset that we will surely develop: the installation of a second robot for visceral surgery is planned, after the one in Meaux.
Why, despite the data put forward by this ranking, we still hear a lot of criticism about Ghef. Where do you think this discrepancy comes from?
40% of patients in northern Seine-et-Marne seek treatment in one of the Ghef hospitals. The best hospitals are at 50%, so we are not so bad but we can do better.
This also means that 60% of patients in North 77 go to a private establishment or to Paris. There is still a strong belief that when you go to Paris and pay, you are treated better, but this is false!
Almost all of the reviews we receive concern a trip to the Emergency Department. Patients are very critical of their waiting time and the conditions in which they wait to be seen. The opening of the new Meaux Emergency Department in March should improve care. We will have three streams: one for adults, one for children and one for mental health. The organization of care, upon arrival, will be different, the patient experience will improve. Then, it will be the turn of the Emergency Department at the Marne-la-Vallée site to be renovated, in particular to improve the waiting area.
But we must not forget that all this will be accompanied by an increase in the population and therefore a strong demand for our Emergency services, in a department where the medical density is the lowest, which leads patients are increasingly heading to emergency services due to a lack of doctors in town.
