Ukraine says it repatriated 189 prisoners of war in exchange with Russia

Ukraine and Russia carried out a new exchange of prisoners of war on Monday. kyiv has brought back 189 former captives, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Monday.

Mr Zelenskiy thanked the UAE and other partners for facilitating the exchange.

“The return of our fellow citizens from Russian captivity is always very good news for each of us. And today is one of those days: our team managed to bring 189 Ukrainians home,” said M . Zelenskiy on the Telegram messaging app.

Earlier on Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry reported on the prisoner exchange, saying each side had released 150 prisoners of war. No explanation was immediately given for the difference between the figures communicated.

Mr. Zelenskiy said the Ukrainians who returned included soldiers, sergeants and officers from different areas of the front line, as well as two civilians who had been captured in the southern port of Mariupol, taken by Russian troops in 2022.

Photos released by Mr. Zelenskiy show dozens of men sitting on a bus, some of them wrapped in Ukraine’s blue and yellow national flags.
