Welcome » Security » Tibor Nagy: “It’s incredible how much France has lost its influence in Africa this year”
Tibor Nagy spoke of France’s loss of influence in Africa in the year 2024 through the closure of several military bases, particularly in the Sahel.
The year 2024 was special for France in West Africa. The French army was driven out of Niger, Burkina Faso and Niger. The latest departure was Chad, which threw out the French army. The Chadian government has broken the defense agreement with the French army. For President Mahamat Idriss Déby, this defense agreement is obsolete.
In the process, Senegal announced that it will close all French military bases on its territory. “Senegal therefore announced the closure of “all foreign military bases”, that is to say France – since these are the only foreign military bases. It’s incredible how much France has lost its influence in Africa this year,” wrote Tibor Nagy.
According to Paris, the French presence aims mainly to ensure regional security and to fight against terrorism. However, it also sparks debates on France’s involvement in Africa.
