Algeria Football– The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently imposed financial sanctions on two flagship clubs on the continent, CR Belouizdad (Algeria) and AS FAR (Morocco), following inappropriate behavior by their supporters during CAF matches. CAF Champions League.
$10,000 fine for CR Belouizdad
Algerian representative CR Belouizdad was fined $10,000 after supporters used smoke bombs during their match against South Africa's Orlando Pirates. This meeting, which was part of the prestigious continental competition, was marked by acts which contravened strict CAF regulations regarding security and conduct of supporters.
These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges African clubs face in ensuring a safe and respectful environment, both for players and spectators.
$15,000 fine for AS FAR
On the Moroccan side, AS FAR was also severely sanctioned by CAF, with a total fine of $15,000. This penalty includes:
- 5 000 dollars for the use of smoke bombs by supporters.
- 10 000 dollars for the use of lasers aimed at opposing players during his match against Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.
These incidents, although less serious in terms of physical security, disrupt the progress of matches and tarnish the image of African competitions on an international scale.
A call for responsibility from clubs and supporters
CAF has, on several occasions, reaffirmed its commitment to promoting high standards of discipline and fair play. The sanctions imposed on CR Belouizdad and AS FAR remind African clubs of their responsibility towards the behavior of their supporters.
To prevent such offenses in the future, clubs will need to step up their awareness-raising and enforcement efforts during matches, including putting in place strict measures to detect and prohibit prohibited items in stadiums.
