An American man or woman has become a billionaire after winning the Mega Millions jackpot. $1.22 billion was at stake, the fifth largest amount in history. The winning ticket was validated at a gas station in the state of California. The identity of the winner has still not been revealed.
The fifth largest jackpot in Mega Millions history was won on the night of December 27 to 28 after weeks of unsuccessful drawings. The winner validated the winning numbers (3, 7, 37, 49, 55 and 6) at a gas station in the town of Cottonwood, 210 kilometers from the city of Sacramento, in the state of California.

The biggest lottery win was $2.04 billion
The identity of this new billionaire has not yet been revealed; we do not even know if he knows that he holds the winning ticket and if he will claim his prize. The winner can claim the entire jackpot, or $1.22 billion (€1.17 billion) in annual payments over a period of 30 years.
Or, he can opt for a one-off cash payment amounting to $549.7 million, or €527 million, before taxes. Residents of 45 US states can participate in the Mega Millions drawing.
