Horrible news for Canada at the World Junior Championship.
And I’m not talking about yesterday’s defeat against Latvia…
In addition to this national disappointment, the young 17-year-old defender Matthew Schaefer had to leave the match yesterday after colliding with the post.
And today, we learned that one of the best prospects in the next draft will have to miss the entire tournament because of this sequence.
Schaefer broke his collarbone and will miss at least two months, if not three months…
As Bob McKenzie mentions in his tweet above, 19-year-old defenseman Sawyer Mynio should join the Canadian team.
In addition, McKenzie also specifies that even if it is not confirmed yet, that it would be possible to see Carson Rehkopf complete the 25-player roster.
Just recently, Stéphane Leroux confirmed the addition of Mynio and Rehkopf to officially complete Canada’s final 25-man roster.
Rehkopf made the team last year and it’s pretty surprising we didn’t see him make the team right off the bat.
It’s very rare that we draft a 19-year-old guy for this tournament, especially when he was there last year at 18.
His experience will definitely come in handy in this tournament.
He and Mynio will undoubtedly be good additions to the Canadian roster.
Two of the great forgotten players of this tournament, Carter Yakemchuk and Zayne Parekh, reacted following Canada’s defeat yesterday.
On the Sportsnet post showing the final result, we can see that both of these defenders liked this post.
Everything to create controversy in Canada.
The frustration of the majority of Canadian fans in the face of the cut of these two young people is understandable.
Offensively, they have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of and are very electrifying.
On the other hand, their physical and defensive play is very limited and that can only harm a team like the Canadiens currently.
We must keep in mind that there cannot just be the best prospects, or the best offensive players on a team. It has to be balanced and the choice not to take Parekh and Yakemchuk therefore makes perfect sense.
With Mynio to make up for the loss of Schaefer and Rehkopf adding depth, Canada should be fine, but will really have to step up their game.
