Team Canada defender Matthew Schaefer was injured in the first period during the game against Latvia at the World Juniors on Friday.
He did not return to the game afterward.
Head coach Dave Cameron was unable to provide further details on his condition during the press scrum following the ECJ’s 3-2 shootout loss.
On Friday morning, the Canadian team added guard Sawyer Mynio to its roster on the IIHF website.
During an early power play, the 17-year-old guard was injured when he hit his left shoulder hard against the post after receiving a shot on goal from Linards Feldbergs, then hit the boards. He remained on the ice for a while before returning to the locker room.
The team then confirmed that their evening was over.
Schaefer had a goal and an assist in ECJ’s first match on Thursday, a 4-0 win over Finland.
Forward Calum Ritchie also went to the locker room after falling on a skate, but quickly returned to the bench.
Mynio is a Vancouver Canucks prospect who has 19 points in 18 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds in the WHL this season.
He will make his debut for Canada when he sees action.
