Championship boxer Paul Bamba has died at the age of 35, his manager Ne-Yo confirmed Friday.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the singer and manager, as well as Bamba's family, confirmed the boxer's death.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” the statement began.
“He was a fierce but confident competitor, with a relentless ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a wonderful individual who inspired many people with his exceptional drive and determination. »
Bamba won the WBA Gold title on December 21 in New Jersey, less than a week before his death. He signed with the Grammy-winning R&B singer shortly before the fight.
“I am honored to work with Ne-Yo and am grateful for his unwavering belief in me,” Bamba said in a statement at the time.
“I know he has the ability to open new doors and create opportunities for me to grow as a fighter. This will be an exciting new chapter. »
On December 24, he posted a message on Instagram reflecting on his success this year.
“This year I started with a goal. That's exactly what I did! It was not easy, there were many obstacles that I adapted to overcome and stayed on the path we had set, regardless of the extenuating circumstances,” Bamba wrote.
“14 fights, 14 knockouts ending in the WBA Gold cruiserweight world title. Happy to have my family, my team and all my supporters along the way. »
