Brighton v Brentford predictions
A bit of consistency would have been high enough on the Christmas lists for Fabian Hurzeler and Thomas Frank, as well as fans of their clubs, Brighton and Brentford.
There are many similarities in the way these clubs operate behind the scenes: both place a high emphasis on data-driven transfers and discovering gems from abroad, and their image seeps onto the pitch.
Both teams have had excellent highs this season. Brighton’s undoubted highlight was a 2-1 victory over Manchester City while Brentford’s was a 4-2 defeat to Newcastle, but maintaining top form proved difficult for both men.
The Seagulls’ winless run was extended to five with a frustrating 1-1 draw at West Ham last Saturday. That streak also includes draws with promoted pair Southampton and Leicester and a home defeat to Crystal Palace, making their price tag fairly easy to deviate against the Bees.
Brentford’s unbeaten home record was abandoned in a 2–0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, a result which marked a fourth defeat in five for the Bees.
Frank’s men have also fared even worse on their travels, losing seven of their eight away games in the Premier League, which also makes the visitors’ victory easy to get around.
The result is so difficult to call that looking at the goals might be a smarter play, especially given both men’s tendency to be involved in high-scoring games.
Thirteen of Brentford’s 17 Premier League matches have featured at least three goals, including nine of the last 11, while the same is true of seven of Brighton’s last eight home games in all competitions.
The last meeting between the pair ended 0-0, but both men have only managed three clean sheets in their 34 league matches in total this season, so it is difficult to envisage a similar result this time.
Both teams’ strength lies in attack, which further enhances the possibility of a scoring frenzy at the AmEx.
Even without Danny Welbeck, Brighton have Joao Pedro, Georginio Rutter and Evan Ferguson and Hurzeler’s men have scored in their last 13 league matches.
However, both teams have scored in 12 of those games, so expect Brentford, led by Bryan Mbeumo (10 goals) and partner Yoane Wissa, who has nine strikes, to play their part on the south coast.
Despite their travel woes, the Bees have still scored in six of their seven away losses, so improving a punt by more than 2.5 goals by helping both teams score could prove to be a game profitable in this clash between two inconsistent but entertaining teams. .
Key statistic
Both teams score and over 2.5 goals have been a winning bet in 13 of Brentford’s 17 Premier League games.
