A man in his forties died after sinking into the waters of the Harricana River on Christmas Eve, in Amos in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
On December 24 around 11:15 a.m., a passerby called emergency services after seeing a snowmobile helmet on the ice in a clear water hole on the Harricana River.
Authorities rushed to the scene to notice traces of a snowmobile traveling from north to south to stop at the same clear water hole.
The Sûreté du Québec found a pair of mittens and a bundle of fur in addition to the snowmobile helmet very close to the hole, added Sergeant Nancy Fournier.
The police carried out searches on the ground. Divers from the Sûreté du Québec, for their part, arrived on site on December 25.
According to spokesperson Nancy Fournier, the victim, a man in his forties, was pulled from the water around 4 p.m. on Christmas Day by divers.
His death was noted as soon as he was fished out, she said.
The exact cause of his death is not yet known and will be determined by a coroner.
