Thanks to the diversity of its landscapes and its infrastructure dedicated to cinema, the Kingdom was selected to host the filming of the major film “Cleopatra”.
The Moroccan south continues to attract foreign productions. After the mega-production “Gladiator II” by Ridley Scott, the film “Cleopatra”, supported by Universal Pictures and Atlas Entertainment, is advancing in its development phase and could soon be shot in Morocco. According to the specialized production site Bulletin, Morocco is considered one of the main filming locations for this big-budget historical fresco. “Cleopatra is currently in active development with Universal Pictures and Atlas Entertainment attached to the likely big-budget epic film. The report also suggests that the production team has chosen an exciting new location for the film, with Morocco listed as a filming destination,” the site reads.
According to the same source, Gadot’s Cleopatra film was first announced in October 2020, with Gadot set to star and produce. Originally, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was attached to direct, but she stepped down in December 2021 due to scheduling conflicts, along with Kari Skogland, known for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier , taking over as director. The film has faced delays, including a transition from Paramount Pictures to Universal Pictures in 2022 and an extended development period to reportedly ensure a thoughtful and respectful portrayal of Cleopatra
. To note, the film is about Cleopatra, the daughter of Ptolemy, descendant of the leader of Alexander the Great’s army. When Pompey’s rival Julius Caesar fled to Egypt after a brutal war for control of the empire, Egypt became a refuge for the Roman ruler. Two siblings fought for the throne of Egypt. After winning this internal struggle by personally appealing to Caesar, Cleopatra had a complicated relationship with Rome, becoming the lover of Caesar and later Mark Antony. This last alliance would cause the loss of Antony and Cleopatra. With this project, Morocco confirms its position as a host country for major film productions in search of authentic and spectacular settings. Thanks to its rich heritage, world-class infrastructure, highly qualified professionals and financial incentives, Morocco has consolidated its place as an essential destination for global film productions.
