A family doctor who listens to his patients, who himself fought against his illness: “I think I have done the most for my patients, and think I can take a well-deserved retirement”.
Friday, December 20, guests flocked to the village hall for Doctor Éric Guiu’s retirement party. His patients wanted to thank the family doctor they have always known, over 3, 4 or even 5 generations.
Indeed Éric Guiu, after having been a replacement doctor for 3 years during his internship and his military service, settled 37 years ago in Fabrezan and Ferrals, succeeding Doctor Bruguière, and collaborating with doctors Laurent Garel, Rami as well as doctors Sophie Gautard and Touafik El Meddeb. Appointments and administrative work were carried out throughout these years by several secretaries, Ms. Tournier, Ms. Ricard, Ms. El Meddeb and Ms. André.
Éric Guiu thanked them, thinking of the colleagues who have since died, as well as the pharmacists, physiotherapists and nurses, with whose help he accomplished his nursing mission. Éric Guiu greeted all the people who supported him during his hospitalization when he himself contracted the Covid virus: his wife, his daughter, his family and the team of emergency doctors-intensivists at the Narbonne hospital center . With palpable emotion, he spoke of this painful episode in his career which he had to put on hold for some time. A career that he immediately resumed, however abandoning his position as sports doctor with the French rugby union team in 2022.
Good memories were also discussed: the exciting period at the Samu de Saint-Gaudens, the beginnings of its installation “where every patient had a doctor… for 15 years I have been forced to refuse new patients”.
Mayor Isabelle Géa spoke, praising the qualities of “patience, listening, courage, and responsiveness, from Doctor Guiu. I would like to express my gratitude for your involvement alongside me so that in November 2017, when Fabrezan no longer had any doctors, we were able to reopen a multidisciplinary municipal medical office.”. The mayor then offered him the city medal. Everyone then shared an aperitif dinner prepared by the team from the Bembe tapas bar in Ferrals-les-Corbières.
